Am I the Only One? WordPress Edition

I thought it’d be fun to find out if anybody feels/thinks the way I do about this beautiful site we call WordPress. So here goes…

Am I the only one:

  1. Who thinks orange is the best color on the whole website? Especially when it’s in the top right corner of the screen? ;)
  2. Who sees the World Trade Center buildings in their stats bar when they have a lot of views two hours in a row? :(
  3. Who wishes people knew that you have to click ‘reply’ under the person’s comment you want to respond to, otherwise they don’t get notified of it?
  4. Who would like to be able to block ‘likes’ of people who are just trying to get you to visit their blog and have no interest in your post? (grr)
  5. Who loves browsing favorite topics in the Reader?
  6. Who is embarrassingly jealous of bloggers who have been Freshly Pressed? (not proud of this – haha)
  7. Who wishes there were more pre-teens and teens with blogs so their daughter/son could interact with bloggers the way that we get to?
  8. Who gets super excited when they have comments waiting for them in the morning when they get up?
  9. Who realizes there are way more smart people in the world than they thought, before being part of WordPress?
  10. Who would likely go into a deep depression if the site ever crashed?!?! (sad, but true)

I love this!! I totally agree with all of them, but my favorites are: 1, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10! I started blogging in November and wish I had started sooner. It’s been a total blast and it’s something I look forward to doing just about every day. Can I add one to the list: Who looks forward to their favorite bloggers posts everyday?

  2. Sowm says:

    I agree with 8, 9 and 10 :)

  3. Oh yes definitely. And haha for #4, I actually thought of that too! I think my favorite ones are definitely # 1 and 6. Who loves that this is one of the few spots where you can interact with people all around the world on various subjects that interest you.

    • Valerie says:

Absolutely!! It’s incredible to me how very much the same we are in thoughts and feelings even though so far apart in distance and culture! I love that aspect of blogging. Good one! :D

  4. I personally haven’t been at all impressed by the freshly pressed bloggers except a few. They are all probably authors… but just because you have been published doesn’t mean you can write! Nice post!

  5. Mommy Glover says:

LOL, these are so true! I still like WP better than blogger! :)

  6. Amanda says:

    1, 6, 8, and 9… Me, me, me, meeee!!! Lol :)

  7. Anna says:

Especially 3, 5, and 8! By the way, I thought about hitting like, but then worried you’d think I was just trying to self-promote *grin* do people do that? I only like my favorite posts because I figure that’s like voting “yes, please” for that content :)

I also get a thrill when people contact me and/or comment – it’s wonderful to make personal connections and share stories. And the nerd in me loves all the statistics info WP provides!

    • Valerie says:

Heck yeah, people do that! If you look at this post, for example…that first dude clicked ‘like’ within 30 seconds of me posting because he follows me and I showed up in his Reader. The fact that you can like from the Reader is a mistake, if you ask me. If people had to actually visit the post, maybe they’d READ it! ;) You ‘like’ the way I do, for the content.
I love sharing stories and experiences too. <3 Oh, and I LOVE the stats page as well!! (Does that make me a nerd? Hmm ;) )

  8. ksujulie says:

    Ah! I don’t like number 10 at all….Lol

  9. ana74x says:

Omg, yes yes yes. Every. Single. One. You have totally nailed what I love about WordPress. And where before all I wanted was to be thin and rich, all I need now before I die is to be Freshly Pressed. Great post.

  10. pinkbekah says:

Definitely understand 1, 2, 5, and 8! Although for #2 I usually just think of a downtown skyline.

    • Valerie says:

I would have pictured a city skyline too, but I’ve seen so many images of the buildings since 911, that now I can’t seem to unsee it. :/ Thankfully it doesn’t happen too often. Most of the time I see up and down waves. ;)

  11. Sarah says:

Yes yes yes to all of this!

  12. Zee says:

Me me me!! But I identify most with #1, #5, #8 and #9. WP is indeed a great platform. I have to admit that ever since I migrated to a self-hosted site, it’s been a little lonely on that side of the planet because I am a little disconnected from the rest of the WP bloggers. For example, my new posts no longer automatically show up on others’ feeds (which affects their ability to comment with ease) and people can no longer find me via the various topics featured on WP.com’s website. These are features which I took for granted previously. Well, but I cannot have everything! Just food for thought for people who are thinking of self-hosting.

Loved this post btw. And I love that you write about such varied topics. Keep writing :)

    • mummyshymz says:

Oh and I was wondering why your posts have stopped recently :p

    • Valerie says:

I know! I was thinking that the other day, about how it has to be hard going from such a connected blogging site, to one on your own (so to speak) and having to build readership again. I’m following you and get email notifications, though. :D
Thanks, I love thinking and writing about all different topics! It wouldn’t be as fun to just focus on one aspect of my life, I don’t think. We’re many things, after all! ;)

      • Zee says:

Haha thanks so much Valerie! So kind of you. And I appreciate that you still read my posts!

Thanks for subscribing mummyshymz! Was wondering why I haven’t heard from you for such a long time. :p

Back to the topic of self-hosting, I do think it is key to build up your readership first before moving over to a self hosted website because you no longer have the resources that WP provides and are pretty much on your own to build up readership. Something I should have realized before I took the leap of faith. Haha.

      • Valerie says:

Sure thing! I think it’s like starting over unless you have a lot of faithful readers (which would likely take many months/years to have!)

  13. pinulotta says:

How true! How did you come up with the idea to write a post about WordPress? Such a good idea! By the way, I’ve finally gotten a button! (okay, I guess I’m a little excited ) :)

    • Valerie says:

I had the idea of doing an “Am I the Only One?” post, where I’d talk about a bunch of random things, but then it occurred to me that I could narrow it down to a theme, and I love WordPress, so why not let *that* be my first theme? :D Thanks, this has been fun hearing from everybody!
I can’t wait to see your button!

  14. I liked this just to get you to read my blog – haha! :) j/k I love wordpress because it lets me “meet” cool people that I probably never would have otherwise!

  15. mummyshymz says:

Haha so true. I was wondering about some of these things myself. #4- what about follows too? For #1 &3 – I’m hardly on my pc, I usually read and reply on my phone (loving the updated WP app – I couldn’t get notifications before this!) i’m not sure if my comments get through sometimes. And is there anyone who checks their stats everyday?

    • Valerie says:

Yeah, it’s nice when people follow, but then you see that they really have no interest. Such a letdown. haha
Yes, I check my stats most days. Usually to find out where people came from (referrals) and also which links were clicked. This helps me to know my audience a little bit better by knowing whick links are helpful, as well as which sites help bring in readers (like Pinterest).
Oh no, I couldn’t stand not getting notifications! I’m glad you’re able to now. :)

      • mummyshymz says:

Yes. The stats page is really useful to understand who is reading our blog. At the beginning I had no idea there were notifications on my comments – until I logged onto my pc (like a month later) :p so whoever replied didn’t get any feedback from me.

  16. nattienat says:

As for #7, the teen place to blog is Tumblr for sure. My 14 year old little sister is on it all day long!

  17. WordPress has been so instrumental in getting me connected with amazing people! I also appreciate that it has helped me so much me in my thought processes. =>

  18. Joyce says:

Yes, yes, yes! And I have long thought about doing an entry to call out by name those serial likers who don’t actually read my stuff. Do you hear me, Humanity777?

And you know, I always forget to browse the topics. When I want to see some new writing I go straight to Fresh Pessed, as if those writers have time to acknowledge my visit or comment when they are trying to manage their newfound celebrity.

But yes, I love this place. The community is awesome. And for me, blogging is like exercise. I feel terrible when I don’t do it.

    • Valerie says:

LOL! Humanity777, too funny! I seriously get so tired of seeing all those bloggers’ avatars! My daughter and I call them “spam likes”, “spam follows”…
Oh, you should browse Topics! It’s such a great feature of WP! :D

  19. I agree with it all!

Yes, Freshly Pressed is a thorn in my virtual bottom too. I think though that it truly is more of a luck thing than just a talent thing. I think it is the ones that are good posts that just happen to be read by the right person… we don’t really have any control over that stuff. Perhaps we’ll someday be seen by the right person!

Hmmmm… I don’t get many of those odd likes. Most of the likes I get are from repeat readers that I interact with, but every so often I get an odd duck. I do get some pretty interesting stuff in my askimet though! You’d think that after awhile those spammers would figure out how to use proper English!

WordPress is a beautiful site, and very user friendly for the most part. I’m wavering between purchasing my own domain and just staying with the free and easy free stuff.

And yes, yes, comments make me VERY excited! I love it when people comment!

    • Valerie says:

Oh my word, lately about 25% of the likes I get are spam! lol I used to think they were just non-commenters but that is absolutely not the case! They’re not reading a darn word I say. :P Nor I them!
WP is so user-friendly isn’t it? Well, if you upgrade but stay with WP I think that turns out to be the best way if most of your followers are WP’ers, that way they can all still follow, etc.

  20. Number 9 is sooo True . I am still fairly new to blogging and omg I have come across some amazing blog, nuthing to do with (Nutrition) just general topics. Its a whole different world out there. I love it.

Ps sorry I missed the blog party , I just realised I missed it :( so upset about it. I should have noted it down in my diary.
    xo

  21. I would have to completely agree with #1, 5, and 10. I absolutely love the little button light up orange. In fact, It’s orange right now!! I can’t wait to find out who commented on me this time. The reader is so great too. I do wish that I didn’t have to log in to like something when I followed a link from the reader e-mails. It’s a bit cumbersom to do on my phone which is where I do a lot of the reading of posts. And yes, I’d hate it if wordpress died. I love posting new recipes and little man’s progress (he’s crawling now!!) and I love getting great ideas from so many awesome bloggers!!!

  24. LOL! Thanks for pointing me to this post! I am guilty of many of these! I do live for that flash of orange in the top right corner…
